Szeląg Wielki and Szeląg Mały lakes once formed a single body of water.
Szeląg Wielki and Szeląg Mały lakes once formed a single body of water. It was only the construction of the railway carried out in 1871-1873 that forced major changes in the surrounding terrain, and above all the creation of a huge embankment. A high dyke was built across the lake, and a tunnel was placed in it through which a canal was routed. The canal was built by French prisoners after France's defeat in the war with Prussia (1870-1871). Today it is the so-called Warmiński Canal allowing navigation from Szeląg Mały to Szeląg Wielki. It is the only navigable tunnel in Poland.
